Jump starter for a van: which CCA do you need?

In short
  • For most vans you need a jump starter with at least 960 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps, the real starting power in a cold start).
  • Vans often run on diesel and have a larger battery, so they need more starting current than a regular petrol car.
  • Choose a model whose CCA equals or exceeds the EN rating on your battery, with some margin for cold mornings.
  • For a heavy or older diesel van, the Boost Pro 8250 or the Boost Xtreme 8250 is the safest choice.

Your van sits cold on the driveway in the morning, you have a full day of work ahead, and the engine will not start. A dead battery means downtime, and downtime costs you money. With the right jump starter you start it yourself within a few minutes, without waiting for roadside assistance. The only question is which one fits a van. Below you will find exactly how much CCA you need and which model fits.

Why a van needs more starting power

A van is not a passenger car. Most vans run on diesel, and a diesel engine has a higher compression. That means it needs more starting current to fire up, especially in the cold. It also has a larger battery, often 70 to 100 Ah, with an EN rating that is considerably higher than a small petrol car. If you drive a lot of short trips or run a lot of electronics, the battery is often not fully charged. All these factors together mean one thing: you need a jump starter with enough CCA.

How much CCA do you need for a van?

The rule of thumb is simple. The CCA of your jump starter must equal or exceed the EN rating on your battery. That EN rating is on your battery label, for example EN 720. For a standard diesel van, 960 CCA is plenty. If you have a large van, an older battery, or you often start in the cold, choose a model with extra margin, towards 1,440 CCA or higher. Do not look at the inflated peak current number on the box, look at the CCA. You can read why that number is so often misleading in our article about peak current or CCA.

Boost Max 10200 1,440 9 L large or older van €249,95
Boost Xtreme 8250+ compressor 1,920 12 L heaviest diesels, also tire pump €399,95

The Boost Air Plus is not yet in stock. It arrives in December 2026 and can now be reserved at the preorder price.

Second battery, refrigerated van, or lots of short trips?

If you drive a van with a second battery for a cooling unit or tail lift, the starter battery is often more heavily loaded. Lots of short trips also never fully charge the battery. In those cases, choose a model with margin on purpose. If you also want to keep the tires of your fully loaded van at the right pressure, you need a model with a built in compressor. The Boost Xtreme 8250 is the heaviest duty in that respect, and from December the more compact Boost Air Plus joins it with a compressor of 35 liters per minute up to 10.3 BAR. If the battery is tucked away behind a panel, make sure the cables are long enough to comfortably reach the terminals.

Advice from Gijs · AutoXtreme

"For a van I always prefer to size up. A van that will not start in the morning can cost you half a working day. Look up the EN rating on your battery and get a jump starter with some CCA margin. Then you never face surprises."

Frequently asked questions

How much CCA do I need for a van?

For a standard diesel van, choose at least 960 CCA. Always compare that to the EN rating on your own battery. For a large or older van, or if you often start in the cold, go for 1,440 CCA or higher.

Which jump starter is suitable for a diesel van?

The Boost Pro 8250 with 960 CCA covers most diesel vans. For the heaviest diesels or extra peace of mind, choose the Boost Xtreme 8250, which also has a built in compressor.

Can I start a cold diesel van with a jump starter?

Yes, as long as the CCA of the jump starter equals or exceeds the EN rating on your battery. A diesel needs more starting current in the cold, so choose a model with some margin.

Does a jump starter also work on a van with a second battery?

Yes. You connect the jump starter to the starter battery. A second battery for a cooling unit or tail lift does put more load on that starter battery, so a model with margin is wise.

Where do I connect the clamps on a van?

Directly to the battery terminals: red on the positive terminal, black on the negative terminal. The smart clamps are protected against reverse polarity, short circuits, and sparks. Use a remote ground point only if the clamps are too short.
