- For a typical diesel camper van, choose a jump starter with at least 960 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps), the real starting current for a cold battery.
- Large A-class campers and older diesels need more, towards 1440 to 1920 CCA.
- Always jump start the starter battery, never the leisure battery (the house battery) of your camper.
- A model with a built in compressor lets you top up your tyres on the road right away.
You're ready to leave, or you're at a lovely spot in the Ardennes, and your camper won't start. A flat starter battery happens to campers more often than you'd think, especially after a few days standing still. With the right jump starter you're back on the road within a few minutes. Below you'll find how much CCA a camper needs and what to look out for.
How much CCA does a camper need?
CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is the current a source delivers for 30 seconds at minus 18 degrees Celsius. EN is the European measurement standard for that same value and appears on your battery. Ah (amp hours) is about capacity, not starting power.
The rule of thumb is simple: the CCA of your jump starter must be equal to or higher than the EN value on your starter battery. A diesel camper built on a van chassis, such as a Fiat Ducato or Ford Transit, has a starter battery with an EN value of roughly 700 to 950. Choose a jump starter with 960 CCA and you're safely above that. For a large A-class camper or an older diesel, take a bit more margin. Read more about the right value on our page what is CCA and why it matters.
Why does a camper need more than a regular car?
A camper weighs considerably more and often runs on a diesel engine. A diesel engine has higher compression and therefore turns over harder when starting, especially when cold. On top of that, camper vans sometimes stand still for weeks, which slowly drains the starter battery. Read more about that drain in our article on a battery that discharges after standing still for a long time. Enough CCA margin makes sure your engine starts right away even after a long period of standing still.
Starter battery or leisure battery: which one do you jump start?
This is the most important point with a camper. A camper usually has two batteries: the starter battery for the engine and the leisure battery (the house battery) for your fridge, lighting and water pump. You always jump start the starter battery, since that's the one that supplies power to the starter motor. Never connect to the leisure battery to start the engine. Not sure which is which? The starter battery sits near the engine, the leisure battery is often under a seat or in a separate compartment. If in doubt, check your camper's manual.
How to jump start a camper
Starting works in three steps. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the starter battery and the black clamp to the negative terminal. The smart clamps from AutoXtreme can be clamped straight onto the battery terminals, since they're protected against reverse polarity, short circuits and sparks. As soon as the screen shows 12V Ready, start the engine. If the cables are too short to reach the battery, use a ground point on the engine block as an exception. If the battery is deeply discharged, switch on ForceStart, which briefly bypasses the protection.
On the road on holiday: a jump starter with a compressor
At the campsite or along the route, you don't just want to be able to start. You'll also want to top up your tyre pressure, especially with a heavily loaded camper. A jump starter with a built in compressor does both: it starts the engine and then pumps your tyres to the right pressure, with no need to find a petrol station. The Boost Xtreme 8250 is the heaviest duty model in that range with 1,920 CCA. From December the more compact Boost Air Plus joins it, with 1,200 CCA and a compressor delivering 35 litres per minute up to 10.3 BAR, in a considerably more compact size. Looking mainly for starting security without a compressor? Then the Boost Pro 8250 with 960 CCA is the logical choice.
Which jump starter fits your camper?
| Camper | Starter battery (EN) | Recommended | CCA | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small camper van (petrol or small diesel) | up to 620 | Boost Mini 3750 | 620 | €94,95 |
| Diesel camper (Ducato, Transit)popular | 700 to 950 | Boost Pro 8250 | 960 | €189,95 |
| Diesel camper, and you also want to inflate tyres | up to 1.200 | Boost Air Plus+ compressorDecember | 1.200 | €179,95 |
| Large A-class camper or older diesel | 950 and up | Boost Max 10200 | 1.440 | €249,95 |
| Heaviest diesel, and you also want to inflate tyres | all | Boost Xtreme 8250+ compressor | 1.920 | €399,95 |
The Boost Air Plus isn't in stock yet. It arrives in December 2026 and can be preordered now at the preorder price.

- 960 CCA, ample margin for a typical diesel camper
- Smart clamps with protection against reverse polarity, short circuits and sparks
- Ordered before 5pm, shipped the same working day
"Before you leave, look up the EN value on your starter battery and choose a jump starter with at least as much CCA. Going on a long trip with a heavily loaded camper? Then take a model with a compressor. That way you fix a flat battery and a soft tyre with the same device."
Frequently asked questions
What CCA do I need for a camper?
For a typical diesel camper, choose at least 960 CCA. Large A-class campers and older diesels need more, towards 1440 to 1920 CCA. Always compare the CCA with the EN value on your starter battery.
Can I jump start the leisure battery of my camper?
No, to start the engine you always connect to the starter battery, never the leisure battery. The starter battery sits near the engine. The leisure battery powers your fridge and lighting and has nothing to do with starting.
Does a jump starter work on a diesel camper?
Yes, as long as the CCA is equal to or higher than the EN value on your starter battery. A diesel needs more starting current than a petrol engine, so choose a model with some margin.
Can I also inflate my camper's tyres with a jump starter?
Only with a model that has a built in compressor. That's currently the Boost Xtreme 8250, and from December also the more compact Boost Air Plus. They start the engine and then pump your tyres to the right pressure.
How many times can I start with a fully charged jump starter?
That depends on the model's capacity and the size of your engine. With a typical camper you get multiple starts from a single full charge. Recharge the jump starter after use.
