What do you do after jump starting your car? Here's how to recharge the battery

In short
  • Drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes without stopping after jump starting, so the alternator can recharge the battery.
  • Only disconnect the clamps once the engine is running steadily at idle.
  • Turn off big power users such as the air conditioning and the seat heating for the first few minutes, that speeds up charging.
  • Do you need to jump start the same car again within a few days? That is a sign the battery or the charging system needs attention.

The engine is running again, and the relief is real. But jump starting itself is not the end of the story. Your battery is still (almost) empty right now, and a few things you do next decide whether you are stuck again within the hour. Below you read in 4 steps what to do after starting, and when a jump starter is a sign that something bigger is going on.

4 steps after jump starting

  1. Let the engine run

Once the engine starts, let it idle for at least a minute before you disconnect anything. That way you know it will not stall again as soon as you remove the jump starter.

  2. Disconnect the clamps

Remove the clamps from the battery once the engine runs steadily. Do not let the red and black clamp touch each other while disconnecting, that causes a short circuit.

  3. Drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes without stopping

Only driving with a running engine actually recharges the battery. A few short trips in a row will not do that, because the alternator gets too little time each time to give back the energy that starting cost.

  4. Have the battery tested if this happens more often

Did you need to jump start the same car again within a few weeks? Then the battery is probably near the end of its life, or there is a hidden power drain somewhere. A garage or battery shop measures that in a few minutes.

How much driving do you need to fully recharge the battery?

That depends on how flat the battery was and how much power you use on the way. A healthy battery that only went flat from cold weather or a light left on is a lot better after one uninterrupted 20 to 30 minute drive. Do not count on a short 5 minute trip to the supermarket: that costs the alternator almost as much energy at the start as it gives back in that time. Preferably drive a route with a somewhat higher speed, because the alternator charges faster at motorway revs than crawling through town.

Can you turn the car off again right after starting?

Better not. If you turn the engine off again straight after jump starting, the battery is still at almost the same level as right before starting. The next attempt will need a jump starter again. Give the alternator the chance to give back what starting cost first, only then can you use the car normally again.

Watch the dashboard. If a battery or charging warning light comes on after starting, do not ignore it. That often points to a problem with the charging system itself, such as the alternator or the drive belt, not just a flat battery. In that case drive to a garage instead of waiting for the battery to run flat again.

What if the car will not start again the next day?

A flat battery once can happen to anyone, for example from a light that stayed on or a short cold snap. If it happens again soon after, the jump starter does not fix the underlying problem. An aging battery, a faulty alternator or a hidden drain from an accessory then remain the problem, even though you can start it every time. Have the battery and the charging system checked before you get stranded again.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I drive after jump starting?

At least 20 to 30 minutes without stopping. A few short trips in a row do not charge the battery enough, because the alternator gets too little time each time.

When do I disconnect the jump starter?

Only once the engine has idled steadily for at least a minute. That way you prevent the engine from stalling again right away.

Can I turn the car off again right after starting?

Better not. The battery is then still at almost the same level as right before jump starting. Drive for a while first so the alternator can recharge it.

Why does the same car keep needing a jump start?

That usually points to an aging battery, a problem with the alternator or a hidden power drain. A jump starter does not fix that structurally, have the battery and the charging system checked.

Should I watch the dashboard after starting?

Yes. A battery or charging warning light after starting often points to a problem with the charging system itself. Drive to a garage instead of waiting it out.
