Jump starter for an SUV or large car: how much CCA do you need?

In short
  • For an SUV or large car, choose a jump starter from 960 CCA, because these engines need more starting current.
  • Driving a large diesel? Go a step higher: 1,440 CCA or more gives you peace of mind in cold weather.
  • The Boost Pro 8250 covers most SUVs and diesels, the Boost Xtreme 8250 handles the heaviest engines and has a compressor for your tires.
  • Always compare with the EN value on your own battery and build in a margin for short trips or an older battery.

An SUV or a large car does not start with a lightweight jump starter. The engine is bigger, the compression higher, and with a diesel a glow system is added on top. A model that easily starts a small hatchback falls short here. Below you can read how much CCA you actually need and which model fits your car.

Why an SUV or large car needs more CCA

You measure a jump starter's starting power in CCA (Cold Cranking Amps), the starting current on a cold battery. A large petrol engine, and certainly a diesel, needs more torque to turn over, so it draws more current at the moment of starting. In cold weather that demand rises further, because the oil gets thicker. An SUV therefore often has a battery with a higher EN value than a small car. Choose your jump starter with a CCA that matches or exceeds that value. You can read how this works on our page what is CCA and why does it matter.

Which CCA fits which engine?

The table below gives a guideline per engine size. If you're unsure between two models, choose the stronger one. Extra CCA does not harm your car, too little CCA leaves you with a silent engine.

Diesel SUV or large petrol car: which model do you choose?

If you drive a common SUV or a larger petrol car, the Boost Pro 8250 with 960 CCA is the logical choice. It easily turns over most SUVs and diesels up to 6.5 litres. Do you have a large diesel, a pick-up, or a car with a dual battery? Then the Boost Max 10200 with 1,440 CCA gives you more room. For the heaviest engines, and for anyone who likes a wide margin, the Boost Xtreme 8250 with 1,920 CCA is the strongest in the line-up.

Handy for a large car: a compressor and margin

An SUV often runs on larger tires, and those need topping up now and then. A model with a built-in air compressor is handy then, because you start and inflate with the same device. The Boost Xtreme 8250 is the heaviest-duty option here. From December, the Boost Air Plus joins the line-up: 1,200 CCA with a compressor doing 35 litres per minute up to 10.3 BAR, in a size that fits in your glovebox. If you choose purely on starting power, the margin matters most: pick a model that sits well above your battery value rather than one that just dips below it.

Advice from Gijs · AutoXtreme

"With an SUV or large diesel, I often see people choose too light because the model 'seemed enough'. Look at the EN value on your battery and pick a jump starter with a solid margin. On a cold morning, that extra CCA is exactly what gets your car started."

Frequently asked questions

How much CCA do I need for an SUV?

For most SUVs, choose from 960 CCA. Driving a large diesel SUV or a pick-up? Then go to 1,440 CCA or higher. Always compare with the EN value on your own battery.

Which jump starter is suitable for a large diesel?

A large diesel needs a lot of starting current. The Boost Max 10200 with 1,440 CCA or the Boost Xtreme 8250 with 1,920 CCA gives you the certainty you want there, even in cold weather.

Can I use a small jump starter for a large car?

That's not advisable. A jump starter that's too light does not deliver enough CCA to turn over a large or diesel engine. Your car then won't start, and you put heavy strain on the device.

Why does a diesel need more CCA than a petrol car?

A diesel has higher compression and a glow system, which means the starter motor needs more current. For the same engine size, you should therefore always choose a higher CCA for a diesel than for petrol.

Does a jump starter for an SUV need a compressor?

Not necessarily, but it's handy. An SUV often runs on larger tires. The Boost Xtreme 8250 has a built-in air compressor, and from December the more compact Boost Air Plus does the same.
